The blind leading the blind

Have you ever heard the phrase "the blind leading the blind"? Usually it is said somewhat derogatorily. However, today it meant something very different for me. There is an older couple who lives in Goleta who I have seen quite a few times over the past ten years. By old, I mean maybe late 70's, and they are the cutest little pair in the whole wide world. What first catches your attention is their guide dog, and upon closer look you realize that not one, but both of them are visually impaired. They seem to manage incredibly well, using public transportation and walking closely together with their guide dog. I can't imagine living like that, but the amazing thing is that every time I seem them they seem to have a glowing inner joy and they seem to really love and care for each other. How sad is it that this kind of love and commitment is so rare. So today, despite the fact that I don't know them and didn't even speak with them, I was totally inspired by them. Have you ever been inspired by someone like that? I was inspired today to be thankful for all of the blessings in my life, and to treat my husband with the love and respect he deserves. I know that these are things that I typically try to do, but today was like a special mini reminder to try a little harder.

Yet another reason to hate Kmart...

Sunday morning I had to teach Sunday school and, of course, waited until the last minute to get what I needed. I decided to run to Kmart in the morning before church to quickly grab what I needed. Big mistake. As I was walking through the store I noticed the huge back to school section. Need I remind you of my pen fetish? Let me tell you, it was like I was walking by Disneyland and couldn't go in. I knew I didn't have time (or money) to shop so I literally had to tell myself over and over "you can come back later, it's only July, you can come back later". Seriously, people in the store must have thought I was insane. Being the ever patient person that I am, I waited until Monday to go back to Kmart and check out their stuff. Sad, I know. You know that part in You've Got Mail where Tom Hanks says that if he knew who he was writing to he would send her a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils? I love that part. If Matt walked in with a bouquet of pens and clean notebooks I do not know how I would contain myself. Anyway, back to Kmart. I was so incredibly disappointed! The only thing that had good sale prices were the crayons, but not the washable ones, and I had a horrible time trying to find stuff for Bennett. Do you know how hard it is to find stuff for boys that isn't gross or scary looking? I found tons of cute stuff for KJ - princess, strawberry shortcake, care bears, and lots of pink polka dot stuff, but they didn't really have anything for Bennett. He is kind of over the Cars thing, and they didn't have any camo-type stuff which he likes right now. They didn't even have solid blues or reds, everything was pastel. No wonder girls like school more than boys! Once again I was reminded how badly we need a Target. Now that gas prices are so high it is hard to justify a quick trip to Ventura just to go to Target but I don't know what else we are supposed to do. Maybe I should open a target. Or run for president. You know, since both are equally as likely.

Being Two

There is nothing in the world like a two year old, and Camden spent the week being very, very two. Here is a list of why I love my two year old:
Camden has an incredibly large vocabulary, but because he speaks so fast and in such a two year old way, I feel like I am always saying, "What???" And he gets incredibly frustrated if I don't understand him and looks at me like, "Are you kidding me mom? Surely you must know what I am referring to!"
I love how incredibly excited Camden gets when he sees trucks and motorcycles on the freeway. I just wish he would stop screaming "TRUCK" when he sees one, or one of these days he just may get a closer view.
I love that two year olds are not easily embarrassed and are very proud of their accomplishments. For example, when my mom took us to a nice restaurant for lunch the other day, Cam came running out of the bathroom and shouted to everyone within earshot "I went poops in the potty!" Yeah, that one came out nice and clear. And loud.
Two year olds are the most intelligent people on the planet, and they know that because they are two, and they are cute, they can get away with just about anything by either turning on their charm or screaming at the top of their lungs. Both are incredibly annoying and incredibly effective. Camden also has learned that if I am not in the room and he starts crying, his siblings will likely be blamed for whatever just happened. Even if they aren't home.
Two year olds are very independent, and mine wants to do everything himself. Including pour his own juice, put on his own shoes, close all the doors in the house, and drive. Which is why all this week I was a good ten minutes late to everything. Not because I let him drive, but because everything that I won't let him do leads to a minor delay in our day involving lots of tears (mostly by mommy) and a few time outs (again, mostly by mommy).
Don't you just love two year olds? Seriously though, Cam is scarily cute and a charmer. We are in huge trouble. His new favorite thing is to say something he thinks is funny or cute, and then cock his head and giggle, which we then laugh at and he says "I sooo funny". My little monkey already wants to be the class clown. Pray for us!

Fab Five for July

One of the only times I ever watch Oprah is when she has her "favorite things" episodes. I don't know why I bother, it is not like I can afford anything that she picks, but for some reason I like hearing about things other people enjoy. On that note, I decided that each month in my blog I would list 5 of my favorite things. Mind you, I have no corporate sponsors to back me so no one will be getting free stuff for reading about them, but I think it will still be fun. So, here you go!
(1) Favorite Household Product - Mr. Clean magic eraser. I think they should rename it the miracle sponge. I love this thing! I have no idea how it works or what it is made of, but it really does magically erase all smudges, marker, crayon, boogies, etc. off of my walls. I can't help but wonder if they confiscated the material from some alien ship in Area 51, but seriously they should test it on cancer or something because it really is amazing!
(2) Favorite Snack - Dale and Thomas White Chocolate & Peanut Butter Popcorn. To borrow a phrase from Rachel Ray, yum-o. It is the perfect balance of salt and sweet, and its only fault is that it is impossible to find unless you order it online which is expensive. Besides that, it is the perfect snack. And since white chocolate is basically like dairy, and peanut butter is a protein, and popcorn is full of fiber, it is totally healthy. Really!
(3) Favorite Shoes - It is summer people, can you find a better shoe than the flip-flop? And not the cheap ones with the plastic thing in the middle, the really cushy ones with leather or nylon in the middle. My current fav's are sketchers and they are pink and brown. Could there be a better shoe? It is the least amount of footwear possible, which is great for me since I would rather be barefoot all the time anyway. Ironically, the only place I don't like wearing them is at the beach, because either the flip or the flop causes sand to kick up to your bottom. Why is that?
(4) Favorite Beverage - Iced Nonfat White Chocolate Mocha from Starbucks. Not too heavy, not too sweet, cool & delicious. The juice of the gods, need I say more?
(5) Favorite TV Show - Okay, this probably changes daily. However, right now I am totally addicted to Deadliest Catch. Crazy, I know. But something about crab fishing in Alaska is oddly entertaining. Maybe if I lived somewhere that it snows I wouldn't be so fascinated by it, but it is very intriguing and I urge you to give it a try.
So, there you have it. My Fab 5 for the month. Please feel free to leave your fav's for the categories listed, they will change each month :)

The Mommy Shield

Sorry I have been a slacker blogger lately, I have been sick and didn't think that the medication would lead to coherent blog journals. Matt has been great, even though this was probably the worst week for me to get sick. Between KJ's party and getting ready to preach, he has had his hands full. Although I must say, I think he likes showing me how competent he is on his own :)
I think overall my mommy shield is broken. Usually I am the one avoiding cold germs, yucky coughs, and random constipation. Moms can't afford to get sick, so we don't. So what does it mean that in the past month I have had a pinched nerve in my neck, a weird gross rash on my arm, and now this horrific throat virus that makes me feel like I am swallowing glass? Where has my mommy shield gone? Maybe I just need to have another baby - you know, since I am never sick during my pregnancies. Ha ha. Wait a minute, that really isn't a joking matter. For those of you thinking I am getting the baby bug fear not, for no matter how much I may want another one Matt is uber content with our 3 little monkeys. Do you think my mommy shield would come back if I got a puppy?

Happy Birthday Kendall Joy!

( KJ, Five years ago)

To my darling Kendall Joy Ellis on your 5th Birthday,
I cannot believe you are five years old! It seems like just yesterday that I anxiously awaited your birth, praying that the ultra sounds were correct and that you really were a little girl. It seemed too good to be true, I had waited so long for a baby girl and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how beautiful you were. Watching you grow up is a true joy in my life. I love to listen to you sing along with the radio, and watch you dance to any and all music that you hear. I am thankful for your helpful heart and pray that you will find delight in serving others with your kindness. I am glad to see how well you get along with your brothers, I pray that your sibling relationship would always be strong and that you would remain close as your grow older. I enjoy the quiet of your gentle spirit, and pray that your shyness would not stop you from doing anything that you desire. Thank you for being my daughter. Thank you for helping me grow my patience and creative side. Thank you for allowing me to love you as only a mommy can.
Happy Birthday KJ!

Self Reflection

Recently I was told by someone that I seemed cold and unfriendly. I really took it to heart and have tried take time for some self-reflection and even have tried to make more of an effort to be friendly in general. I have worried about it, prayed about it, talked with others, and now I am done. Last night I got the privilege of having a dinner out with girlfriends and I was reminded not only what amazing friends I have, but that I wouldn't have these amazing people in my life if I was the horrible person some people have labeled me as. I spent so much time in my high school and college years trying to be who I thought people wanted me to be and frankly I do not have the time or energy to do it anymore. I was challenged by a good friend before I had kids to live authentically and I really appreciated that advice. It allowed me to deepen some of my relationships and begin some new friendships with people who cared about who I really was. And while I do desire to offer genuine kindness to people around me, I don't think that means that I need to bend over backwards to cheerfully greet everyone who comes into eye contact with me. And even though I have joy in my life, that doesn't mean that I am always cheerful, but I don't think that anyone else needs to take that personally. If they do, that is their issue, isn't it? Obviously I am human, and I want people to like me, but I want them also to see me for who I really am. I am kind of shy (shocker, I know, since I cover it beautifully with my wit and charm), it takes me a long time to warm up to new people, and I am uncomfortable in large groups of people. I guess those things make me seem cold and unfriendly, but they are also who I am and I can't really change overnight and still remain true to myself. I guess my question would be, is it better to be plastic and fake or appear unfriendly to people who don't know me well? And yes, I realize that I am also overly sarcastic at times and that people can be easily insulted or turned off by it; I am working on that one.
Okay, so enough self reflection. This post was as much for me as anyone else, so hopefully I haven't offended anyone, that is the last thing I need right now. I think I need chocolate.
